International Bear Rendezvous 2009

International Bear Rendezvous 2009

International Bear Rendezvous, San Francisco

The International Bear Rendezvous is an annual gathering of bears and bear-lovers held in San Francisco. It is hosted by the Bears of San Francisco, who conceived of Rendezvous as a weekend of fun and fund raising.

The event fosters a sense of community among participants while at the same time raising money for agencies serving the gay and HIV communities at the local, state, and national level. Fund raising is accomplished primarily through raffles, auctions, and direct donations from participants and the community. Since the first Rendezvous in 1995, the net proceeds have resulted in donations totaling over $435,000 to many non-profit organizations.

OUT IN AFRICA - CAPE TOWN PRIDE FILM FESTIVAL
OPENING COCKTAIL PARTY & FILM PREMIERE
THURSDAY 19 FEBRUARY, 19.30. Nu-Metro, V & A Waterfront. R50.
Cape Town Pride is happy to be collaborating with the OUT in Africa Film Festival, who are organising a mini film festival to coincide with this year’s Cape Town Pride Festival. The Grand Opening will be a viewing of “The Marching Season”.
In 2006, in the new and supposedly democratic EU state of Latvia, the Gay Pride parade was banned. In 2007, the organisers persevere and this ‘fly-on-the-wall’ documentary charts the events surrounding Latvia’s first officially sanctioned Latvian Gay Pride parade in Riga. This fascinating exposé reveals how members of the LGBT group Mozaika organise the event despite escalating threats from religious fundamentalists and the curiously-named neo-Nazi homophobic ‘No pride’ organisation.

The film juxtaposes the Riga parade with coverage of the 2007 London Pride drawing parallels with the fight for LGBT rights in 60’s and 70’s Britain. The Marching Season is an absorbing insight into a country where a chilling Soviet-era mind–set still permeates, and a timely reminder of the reasons why we march.
Bookings through the Nu-Metro Box Office @ the V & A Waterfront.
